Two parks, six full day safaris
Bandhavgarh's sandstone cliffs and Kanha's open grass meadows are two incredible places to photograph wildlife. The itinerary spends four nights at Bandhavgarh and five nights in Kanha, and full-day permits in both these national parks allow us ample opportunities to photograph the denizens of the forest.
We arrive into the forest 20 minutes before every other jeep is allowed in, and we get to spend all of midday — when all the other jeeps go out of the park — by ourselves, and then exit 20 minutes after all of the jeeps have left after their evening safaris. These 40 minutes might not seem like much time, but they make a huge difference to wildlife movement.
Day by day
The itinerary
Arrive in New Delhi
Meet Lala at the Radisson Blu Plaza Airport Hotel, or an equivalent. One night to try and beat jet lag. Hard task, I know. But rest assured that the adrenaline will carry you through the next week.
Delhi to Bandhavgarh
A late morning. Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, followed by a 90-minute flight to Jabalpur, where you will be received at the airport by Atlas Wild Experiences staff, and a three-and-a-half-hour drive to King's Lodge, where you will be staying for four nights. You meet the guides at the lodge and get briefed on the days ahead.
Bandhavgarh — three full days
Tea at 4.45 a.m., and then we set off to the park from 5 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. You will be served breakfast and lunch in the park. The benefit of the full-day permit is that we have access to all viewing zones in the park, so we are able to cover a lot more ground than on a regular safari.
Bandhavgarh to Kanha
A four-and-a-half-hour drive through buffer zones, villages and farmlands to Kanha Earth Lodge, for five nights.
Kanha — three full days
Three full day safaris in a completely different landscape, with breakfast and lunch served in the park. Expect some of the most breathtaking landscapes, with open grass meadows, lots of barasingha (hard-ground swamp deer), and light and settings completely different from Bandhavgarh.
The NGO visit
A half day with an organisation working on the ecological and economic resilience of the forest-dwelling communities in Kanha's buffer zone. A guest favourite.
Back to Delhi, and Agra
Land in Delhi for one night. After a night of rest, a guided day trip to the Taj Mahal in Agra, and back to the hotel in Delhi. The room is yours for that night too, in case you have a late-night or early-morning flight home.
